Vale Clifford Mann, Former RCEM President and Fellow of IFEM

IFEM acknowledges the death of former RCEM President Clifford Mann OBE and extends its sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.

Dr Mann influenced an enormous change within the specialty of emergency medicine in the UK, particularly as President of RCEM and as National Clinical Advisor for Urgent and Emergency Care at the NHS.  This was recognized by IFEM by his award of the Order of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine, becoming a Fellow of IFEM in 2019.

Past IFEM President Dr Gautam Bodiwala stated “I had known Cliff and his wife Rhona since both worked for me as trainees.  Cliff has been an inspiration to many in Emergency Medicine. His charm, determination and leadership found solutions for even difficult situations and brought Emergency Medicine into the limelight.  As President of RCEM he was committed to bringing positive change in the specialty of Emergency Medicine.  He will be enormously missed! His untimely death is a great loss to EM”.

Dr Mann was also engaged in improving emergency medical care globally, through his contribution to the work of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.  He was known to be insightful about the challenges faced in improving emergency medical care, at the same time having a down to earth approach and a great sense of humour.
