Education Practice Group
About
Purpose of the Education Practice Group
The Education Practice Group develops and maintains a series of documents relating to curricula recommendations and implementation of educational developments in emergency medicine spanning undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.
Function of the Education Practice Group
The Education Practice Group serves to:
- Design focused emergency medicine curricula for the longitudinal spectrum of medical education: undergraduate and graduate
- Provide recommendations on implementation of a spectrum of curricula to align with the specific needs of various cultures, geographical areas and nations
- Review and modify standing curricula as required
- Prepare educational documents for dissemination via publication, web postings, or presentations at scientific meetings
- Develop and provide medical education activities tailored to specific needs and scientific
- Act as an advisory group with respect to the educational direction of
- Act as an advisory and consultancy group to members seeking advice on the development of emergency medicine content and specialty training across the educational
- Act as an advisory group for the design of educational curricula and training programs for specific areas within emergency medicine
Group Work and Achievements
Endorsement of the International Emergency Medicine Education Project. This is a large international collaborative project led by Alper Cevik and supported by the Committee aimed at improving undergraduate emergency medicine education worldwide.
Research Primers
This work was a collaboration between the Core Curriculum and Education and Research Committee to support teaching of the principles of emergency medicine research during specialist training in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Fourteen topics were identified as being important and relevant to those performing research in LIMCs. Erin Simon worked with the respective Chairs of both committees to coordinate the writing of the primer with each topic being authored by at least one author from a LIMC. Accreditation Framework
Andrew Singer is leading a team to generate a manuscript aiming to provide guiding principles and framework for accreditation of specialist training programs.
Integration of IFEM Curricula
This work aims to facilitate the implementation of IFEM curricula through the integration of previously published IFEM UME, GME and CPD curricula as a continuum of professional practice, expressed in the form of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) required for practice as a specialist in emergency medicine. A team led by James Kwan has successfully obtained ethics approval to identify the essential EPAs for practice as a specialist in emergency medicine using consensus methodology. It is anticipated a draft manuscript will be available at ICEM2020 with the aim of publishing this work in a peer reviewed journal.
Renewal of the IFEM Undergraduate (UME) Curriculum
Work has commenced on the review and renewal of the UME Curriculum, which was first published in 2009. A team led by Alper Cevik has completed a review of the UME curriculum and the findings from this review was presented to the committee in February 2019. It is anticipated the first draft of the renewed UME curriculum will be available at ICEM2020.
