International Research Collaboration Endorsement
The following criteria will assist the IFEM Research Committee to determine whether or not to endorse a research collaboration:
Absolute Criteria:
- There is multi-national membership (defined as ≥2 countries) of the collaboration.
- At least one of the countries will be a member of IFEM.
- The collaboration’s research is primarily related to an aspect of emergency medicine:
- Pre-hospital care (EMS)
- Geriatric/Pediatric Emergency Care
- Emergency Care Systems
- Emergency Department care: Standard practice, Infrastructure, Training, Ultrasound
- Disaster Medicine
- Toxicology/Toxinology
- Medical Education/Training
- New technologies/Point of Care testing/Telemedicine
- Triage and patient flow/administrative issues
- Continuous Quality Improvement
- Digital systems/technologies for emergency care
- The collaboration, collectively, must demonstrate a research track record.
- The collaboration has a Memorandum of Understanding that addresses members’ responsibilities, authorship and intellectual property.
- The collaboration has a clearly documented
- The collaboration has clearly documented Terms of Reference.
- There is documented support from at least two independent referees of international standing.
Desirable Criteria:
- The collaboration has a history of collaboration success, as evidenced by:
- Publications in peer reviewed journals or
- Joint authorship of published clinical guidelines or
- Competitive grant funding success
- The collaboration aims are consistent with IFEM research priorities
- The collaboration is inclusive of:
- low/middle income countries OR
- countries in which EM is emerging
- The research project is not funded or sponsored by industry, and there are no commercial interests for the investigators in the outcome of the research. If the role of industry is clear, and the applicants can demonstrate that there is no conflict of interest, the research project may be considered for endorsement.
- The collaboration is novel and does not replicate an existing collaboration
Mechanism for applying for IFEM endorsement
Step 1: Applicants complete the IFEM Research Collaboration Endorsement Application Form (RCEAF)
Step 2: Applicants pay an application fee based upon the World Bank List of Economies:
Member Fees
- High and Upper Middle income countries: $465AUD
- Lower Middle income countries: $310AUD
- Low income countries:$155AUD

Step 3: The application is scrutinized by the IFEM secretariat for completeness
Step 4: A review subcommittee is convened, by the Chair of the Research Committee, as soon as possible after receipt of the application. It will comprise:
- 3 Research Committee members
- An IFEM content expert(s), if appropriate
- An external expert(s), if appropriate
Step 5: The application is evaluated by the review subcommittee.
- Each member completes a collaboration evaluation form (attached)
- The subcommittee will recommend endorsement if all absolute criteria are met
- The subcommittee recommendation and application are emailed to all Research Committee members
- The application is endorsed if there is general agreement with the subcommittee’s recommendation
- The Research Committee’s decision is forwarded to the IFEM Board for noting
Step 6: The applicants will be advised of the Research Committee’s decision, by email, within 6 weeks of receipt of the application.
Step 7: Review Outcome:
- The application will either be:
- Accepted
- Accepted pending satisfactory revision – feedback will be provided to the applicants and they will be invited to submit a revised application within 3 months.
- Rejected - feedback will be provided to the applicants and they may only resubmit a revised application after a period of 12 months has elapsed
- The decision of the Research Committee will be final
