Disaster Medicine across the life cycle
Hosted by the following SIGs – Disaster Medicine, Paediatrics, Geriatrics, Environmental and Public Health
Target audience
Specialists, trainees and other health care providers interested in understanding the considerations for patients with special needs in a disaster setting. For example, children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups.
Understanding these unique perspectives and needs will allow for better planning and, therefore, a better response for these patients and community groups.
Learning objectives
- Understanding and learning to mitigate the specific factors in a disaster setting that put pediatric/geriatric/psychiatric populations at higher risk
- Understanding of management of the adult psychiatric patient in a disaster setting
- Learn age specific techniques to de-escalate patients in crisis (agitated, suicidal, psychotic and other) as well as safety precautions to put in place to mitigate further risk
- Understanding the disaster triggers that put specific groups at higher risk of bad outcomes
