IFEM-BEEM International Journal Club

-

Target Audience

This event is designed for IFEM’s global community of emergency care professionals, including practicing emergency physicians and trainees across diverse resource settings. It is particularly relevant for clinicians seeking accessible, high‑quality translation of evidence into practical emergency care.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key high-impact emergency medicine studies and explain their primary findings and clinical relevance.

  • Apply structured critical appraisal methods (based on BEEM criteria) to assess the validity and quality of published research.

  • Interpret study results, including measures of effect, bias, and applicability to real-world emergency care settings.

  • Integrate evidence into clinical decision-making, adapting findings to both high-resource and resource limited environments.

  • Discuss the implications of new evidence with peers, contributing to informed, practice-changing conversations in emergency medicine.

Program

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the BEEM (Best Evidence in Emergency Medicine) article selection process and explain the evidence supporting its validity and reliability.
  2. Recognize key methodological approaches used in contemporary pediatric emergency medicine research and assess their strengths and limitations.
  3. Compare commonly used pharmacologic options for acute pain management in children in the emergency department and select appropriate evidence‑based strategies.
  4. Evaluate the evidence for monotherapy versus combination therapy (ibuprofen and/or acetaminophen) in the management of pediatric fever and apply findings to clinical practice.
  5. Assess the benefits and risks of prescribing ondansetron at emergency department discharge for children with acute gastroenteritis and determine appropriate use in clinical scenarios.
