Trauma in Older Adults: IFEM Policy Recommendations

The Trauma and Geriatric Emergency Medicine Special Interest Groups (SIGs) of the International Federation of Emergency Medicine have collaboratively developed guidelines addressing trauma care for older adults.

The guidelines focus on tailoring trauma care based on normal physiological changes of aging (for example, reduced bone density, presence of frailty, and multimorbidity.) It emphasizes the importance of frailty assessments, polypharmacy management, and secondary prevention of falls.

The guidelines emphasise that a multidisciplinary approach -- integrating expertise from emergency physicians, advanced practice nurses, rehabilitation therapists, geriatricians, and others – can improve outcomes and recovery. The guidelines advocate for early intervention strategies, such as frailty screening, to reduce complications and optimize discharge planning.

This collaboration reflects the IFEM's commitment to promoting evidence-based, patient-centred trauma care for older adults. By adopting these guidelines, healthcare providers can ensure safer, more effective management of trauma, ultimately reducing mortality and enhancing the quality of life for this vulnerable demographic.
