Dr Beatrice Hoffmann
American Academy of Emergency Medicine
Chair, Emergency Ultrasound Special Interest Group | Vice Chair Events and CPD Group
Dr Beatrice Hoffmann graduated from the University of Heidelberg Medical School, Germany, where she also received her first education in diagnostic ultrasound in 1990. She initially begun training in internal medicine in Germany, before completing her emergency medicine residency training at York Hospital/Penn State University, graduating in 2003. Beginning in 2004, she served as the Emergency Ultrasound Director at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, later founding the first emergency ultrasound fellowship for Hopkins. Dr Hoffmann became the first Emergency Ultrasound Division Director for Johns Hopkins University and an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in 2013.
Since 2013, Beatrice is now the Emergency Ultrasound and Fellowship Director at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. She has authored over 90 manuscripts and book chapters on the topic of emergency ultrasound, lectured at over 100 national and international venues in 5 continents, and held several national and international society positions. She was the founder and editor of the educational emergency ultrasound website Sonoguide for which she received the national ACEP Ultrasound Section Award in 2008. She is the founding president of the Academy of Emergency Ultrasound of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, which promotes education and research in emergency ultrasound. Beatrice was elected corresponding member of the German Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM), the largest diagnostic ultrasound society in Europe and is member of EuSEM. She was recently appointed task force chair for the development of a joint EuSEM Emergency Ultrasound training curriculum.
