Emergency Medicine Association of Tanzania (EMAT) is a non-profit association composed of Tanzanian emergency medicine physicians, nurses and allied health providers who are actively involved in the provision of emergency care in Tanzania. This association was founded in January 2011 and attained a permanent registration from the Registrar of Societies of Tanzania in May 2011. The main aim of EMAT is to pioneer, promote and advocate for the development of emergency medicine in Tanzania.
The founding of EMAT was inspired by opening of the first full capacity Emergency Department, and launching of the first residency-training program at Muhimbili National Hospital and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es salaam, Tanzania. The field of Emergency Medicine is rapidly expanding in Tanzania; by the end of 2021 Tanzania had 73 qualified Emergency Physicians working in more than ten regions.
