Mentorship

Mentorship in emergency medicine supports growth at every career stage, from students developing clinical thinking, to residents building judgment under pressure, to junior faculty strengthening leadership, teaching, and academic skills. In the fast-paced EM environment, mentors help learners apply knowledge safely, navigate uncertainty, build confidence, and reflect on challenging cases. Beyond clinical practice, mentorship also fosters professional identity, wellbeing, networking, career development, and collaboration, preparing future clinicians not only to provide excellent patient care but also to teach, lead, and advance the specialty. We are continually seeking mentoring and coaching resources to support early emergency medicine career development, and encourage all EEC SIG members to contribute to this ongoing effort.
The EEC SIG recognizes that mentorship should be globally inclusive, bidirectional, and adaptable to different training environments and resource settings. In the coming months, the EEC SIG, with the assistance of the IFEM EM Practice Committee and the IFEM Academic Committee, is excited to launch an IFEM Mentorship program. Participation will require EEC SIG membership and is free and open to eligible early-career EM clinicians.
This 12-month program will aim to connect early-career emergency clinicians with mentors within the IFEM community to support professional growth, leadership development, academic and educational interests, clinical practice, global emergency medicine engagement, and sustainable careers.
