Emergency Medicine is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of unforeseen illnesses or injuries. It comprises a body of knowledge unique to the specialty, as well as areas covered by other specialties as well. The practice of emergency medicine includes the initial evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of any patient who requires medical attention in the emergency department.

An important part of our work is related to the administrative aspects associated with the provision of these services, particularly relevant due to the high flow of patients characteristic of emergency medicine. Also as a specialty we are present in other areas in which the delivery of care is required for problems related to emergency medicine, particularly in pre-hospital settings. 

Emergency Medicine activities are carried out 24 hours a day and 7 days a week in hospital and primary care emergencies, post offices, ambulances and also in special circumstances such as massive events, situations of natural disasters and catastrophes or in remote locations.

The Chilean Society of Emergency Medicine (SOCHIMU) is a non-profit Scientific Society that is in charge of promoting, standardizing and congregating the academic development of Emergency Medicine in Chile. Currently, our society has a Nursing Division and some stable commissions:
