Advancing Patient Care through Technology and Data Analytics White Paper
Executive Summary:
Informatics is defined as the interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health. 1 (See “what is informatics?” appendix 1 ). The rapidly evolving field of health informatics is transforming healthcare by harnessing the power of information, technology, data and analytics. Emergency medicine (EM) is time-sensitive and high-pressure in nature and can significantly benefit from the application of health informatics. The effective utilization of health and informatics can streamline, workflows, improve communication, enhance clinical decision-making, and ultimately save lives. This White Paper addresses the need for incorporating health informatics into EM and provides a roadmap for enhancing knowledge and implementation within the field.
