Dr Gordon Yuet Hong Wu, Resident Trainee, deployed to newly built North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre
Dr Gordon Yuet Hong Wu
Resident trainee, Accident and Emergency Department, Tuen Mun Hospital, Hong Kong
In view of the COVID-19 pandemics, the newly built North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre (HKICC), which is right next to the HK International Airport, has started admission of COVID-19 ambulatory patients with mild to moderate clinical conditions. There are six two-story ward buildings with a total of 816 negative-pressure isolation beds in the Centre.
As a resident trainee in emergency medicine, I am deployed to HKICC and collaborate with other colleagues from the ID team, general medicine, anesthesia and more. It is good to know how to monitor the COVID cases and when to prescribe anticoagulants, steroid or antivirals like remdesivir, which is rarely encountered in the setting of EM.
As to minimize the infection risk, the Centre incorporates several elements of technology advancements, such as teleconsultation (reviewing patient condition in daily ward round via video chat) and eVitals (patient-initiated vitals measurement wirelessly connected to clinical system). For suitable cases, we could also consult our Chinese Medicine fellows and facilitate the recovery of the COVID patients as well.
Working with my colleagues in HKICC is great and satisfying and I hope sooner or later we can go to the airport nearby and travel freely across the globe when the pandemic is over.
